Delivering Sustainable Waste Management Solutions Across Kent

Sonya Cragg

Businesses across Kent have felt the effect of the pandemic on their business in some form. Now, as a new normality emerges, business is booming as consumers return to the high streets, arrange social outings and enjoy the warmer weather that is rapidly approaching.

More so now, businesses are using the greener, sustainability narrative as consumer trends highlight that it is the key to consumers buying decisions. In a report recently released by Footprint intelligence (sponsored by Pernod Ricard), 38% of consumers said environmental and social responsibility was more important to them compared to 12 months ago.

Midas Waste supports this as more businesses are turning to greener, more sustainable waste management solutions to rapidly meet the demands of consumers’ needs for greener business acumen. As one of Kent’s newest sustainable waste management solutions providers, Midas is enabling businesses to strive for greener business acumen, as Founder Sonya explains:

“Consumer demand for greener brands is becoming a common narrative for businesses that approach us. As a local service provider, we are keen to drive the sustainability in Kent by keeping local, reducing carbon footprints of waste, recover and recycling all waste collected within our fleet and partners. We focus on landfill avoidances with greener alternatives for waste disposal where possible.”

62% of executives consider a sustainability strategy necessary to be competitive today, and another 22% think it will be in the future, as Sonya continues:

“Sustainability changes can be daunting and time-consuming for business owners, which is why we make our services jargon-free and handle all waste collection needs – giving business owners the time to focus on core business activities.”

In a recent article produced by Bryony Salter, Business Development Manager (University of Chester)

“66% of global consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable products and this rises to 73% when focusing on Millennials (born 1981 to 1996), who currently have the highest purchasing power. The younger generations (who are even more concerned with ethical consumption) will continue to drive this demand as their purchasing power increases with age.”

The increased awareness created by the pandemic has also captured the attention of local councils to drive recycling. Residential collections in Tonbridge and Malling recycled more than half (51.6%) of the waste collected. Ashford, Maidstone, Folkestone and Hythe, Dover and Tunbridge Wells were also top recyclers in the county.

However, the pandemic affected the national average figure for recycling. This fell last year from 43.8% previously to 42.3%. As the country emerges into the new normality, more consumers are looking to businesses to lead by example, and become greener brands.
To become a sustainable company, waste audits are the first action step to undertake, as Sonya continues: “waste audits establish waste streams and potential cost savings, which enables waste management companies such as Midas, to provide recommendations for improving waste segregation and how to maximise recyclability. With our vast years of experience, Midas would then offer the most suitable containers and specialist equipment e.g., compactors and balers.”

Being able to trace and capture reports on waste is just as important. Consumers are extremely good at spotting a “greenwash” and businesses must also ensure sustainability credentials are genuine and transparent.
